The Electoral Commission (EC) is set to convene with various political parties today, January 29, during its Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting to further explore talks concerning its proposition to shift the general election date.
The proposed change suggests moving both the Presidential and Parliamentary elections from December 7 to November 7. However, the Opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has voiced its opposition, contending that the proposed timeline does not allow sufficient preparation for a seamless election.
Contrastingly, sources within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) indicate that the party’s leadership is currently deliberating on the matter before reaching a conclusive decision.
In a noteworthy development, the NDC has reversed its earlier decision to boycott IPAC meetings. The party, in a statement dated Sunday, January 28, 2024, signed by its General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, revealed that the decision to rescind the boycott came after “enhanced consensus-building.”
IPAC meetings serve as a platform for political parties to review election-related activities and policies, voice grievances, and provide constructive input. Additionally, it functions as an advisory body to the Electoral Commission.
