In the wake of Ghana’s disappointing exit from the 2023 AFCON in Cote D’Ivoire, Majority Leader in Ghana’s Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah Bonsu, has expressed strong opinions on the national team’s performance. Disagreeing with the decision to dismiss head coach Chris Hughton, Bonsu criticized the play of Black Stars captain Andre Dede Ayew, stating that the veteran no longer fits into the team.
The Black Stars faced early elimination from the tournament after failing to secure a victory in any of their three Group B matches. A 1-2 loss to Cape Verde and 2-2 draws against Mozambique and Egypt left Ghana with just two points, marking the second consecutive early exit from the AFCON following the 2021 edition.
During an interview with Angel FM-Kumasi, Osei Kyei-Mensah Bonsu voiced his concern over the frequent changes in coaching staff, emphasizing that stability is crucial for improvement. He questioned the decision to dismiss Hughton, stating, “The constant peeling off of coaches is not going to help us. The players on the field, for us watching, didn’t we not see that some were deficient?”
Turning his attention to Andre Ayew, Bonsu acknowledged the player’s past contributions but asserted that Ayew’s effectiveness in the team has diminished. “Dede, he’s played his part. If we have to be truthful to ourselves, he no longer fits into the team. Why can’t we say it? To me, he’s been a fantastic player like his father was, but now he is a spent force,” he remarked.
