Four Firefighters Injured as Two-Storey Building Collapses in Westlands

In a recent incident in Westlands, West Legon, four firefighters from the Legon fire station sustained injuries when the last floor of a two-storey shop complex collapsed during a fierce fire. The Ghana National Fire Service is actively investigating both the cause of the fire and the subsequent building collapse.

The distress call was received by the Ghana National Fire Service on Wednesday afternoon, prompting the Legon Fire Station to act as the first responders to the blaze. Unfortunately, during their efforts to extinguish the fire, the last floor of the building collapsed, causing injuries to four firefighters.

Of the injured firefighters, two are in critical condition and are currently receiving treatment at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) in Legon, having been referred from the Medifem Hospital, where they were initially treated. The other two officers, who suffered minor injuries, have been treated and discharged.

Earlier today, the management of the National Fire Service, led by Chief Fire Officer Mr. Julius Kunuuor, visited the injured officers at the University of Ghana Medical Centre. They assured the firefighters of the organization’s full support for their swift and complete recovery. The management also expressed sympathy to the injured officers, their families, and the entire firefighting fraternity.

Investigations into the collapse of the building and the circumstances leading to the fire incident are currently underway. The National Fire Service remains committed to determining the root causes of the incident and taking necessary actions to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
