GFA Stands Firmly Behind Coach Hughton Amidst Criticism and Assault After Cape Verde Setback

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has expressed unwavering support for Black Stars Coach Chris Hughton following Ghana’s 2-1 loss to Cape Verde in the opening Group B match of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Despite a minor unrest in the Black Stars camp and verbal altercations between fans, Coach Chris Hughton, and some players after the Cape Verde match, the GFA has confirmed its backing for the coach. Henry Asante Twum, spokesperson for the GFA, stated that they have held a meeting with Hughton and provided him with 100% assurance of their support.

“We have had a meeting with the coach and gave him 100% assurance that we are solidly behind him. We think it is possible for the team to win the two remaining matches to make it to the next round,” said Mr. Asante-Twum in an interview with BBC Sport.

Acknowledging the heightened emotions after the match, Mr. Asante-Twum mentioned that security has been beefed up at the team’s hotel to prevent any further confrontations. He clarified that the verbal altercation did not lead to an arrest, but security intervened to ensure order.

Looking ahead, the Black Stars aim to recover from the Cape Verde defeat as they face the Pharaohs of Egypt in their next encounter on Thursday, January 18, 2024. The GFA remains optimistic about the team’s potential to secure victories in the remaining matches and progress to the next round of the AFCON tournament.
