 Clashes Erupt in Loagri as Residents Confront Police Over Alleged Robbery; 10 Injured

Tensions flared in Loagri, located within the Yagaba/Kubori Constituency of the North East Region, as a confrontation ensued between residents and police concerning the custody of an alleged motorbike thief. The incident, born out of rising frustration due to frequent motorbike thefts during market days, escalated into gunshots, resulting in ten reported injuries.

The community of Loagri has been grappling with a surge in motorbike thefts, particularly occurring on bustling market days. The latest altercation unfolded when a suspect, already wanted for theft, attempted to steal a motorbike within the market’s hustle and bustle.

Caught red-handed, the suspect was chased by the bike’s owner and bystanders. Seeking refuge in a nearby residence, the suspect attracted the ire of locals keen on ensuring justice was served.

As the house owner sought to shield the suspect by securing the door, agitated residents demanded access. Police, patrolling the area due to recurring theft issues, arrived to secure the stolen motorbike. However, they encountered resistance from an enraged crowd fearing the suspect’s escape from justice.

Tensions reached a boiling point as clashes erupted between residents and law enforcement. Witnesses reported confusion over the police’s handling of the situation, with locals questioning the delay in apprehending the suspect. Feeling unheard and disregarded, the residents’ frustration escalated.

In an attempt to disperse the crowd, the police resorted to firing warning shots. This action triggered some residents to retaliate by throwing stones, prompting the police to fire in response. Tragically, ten individuals suffered injuries amidst the crossfire.
