Former Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu, has called for urgent action from both the State and Parliament to rectify the disparities in compensation faced by sanitation workers employed by Zoomlion Ghana Limited. Expressing concern over the significant gap between the state’s payment of approximately GH₵800 to Zoomlion and the much lower remuneration (less than GH₵300) received by the workers, Iddrisu proposed a direct payment system.
During discussions in Parliament, Iddrisu highlighted the need for a separate payment system where the government directly compensates the sanitation workers, bypassing the current channel where Zoomlion receives the payment. He emphasized the necessity to ensure that the funds allocated for sanitation services reach the workers directly rather than being substantially reduced in the process.
Iddrisu stressed, “Zoomlion is a service provider. Let the Common Fund and the State pay him as a private contractor engaged to provide sanitation. When you give him GH₵800 and beneficiaries end up getting GH₵200 or GH₵250, I do not think that that is neat enough or good enough. We should have a way of dealing with beneficiary allowances. It should go straight to those in the sanitation model.”
His plea coincides with revelations from the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament, which highlighted Zoomlion Ghana Limited’s failure to fulfill contractual obligations with two District Assemblies. The committee’s report disclosed that despite receiving payments from the District Assemblies Common Fund for sanitation equipment, Zoomlion did not supply the agreed-upon items to the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai and Mampong districts, breaching contractual agreements.
Speaking on this matter in Parliament, Committee Member Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor explained, “The committee established that Zoomlion Ghana Limited was paid some monies but failed to supply the necessary sanitation equipment to the various assemblies. The company did not supply the items to the assemblies, contrary to regulation 79 of the PFM regulation 2019 LI 2378.”
Zoomlion Ghana Limited, a Ghanaian-owned enterprise specializing in waste management solutions, covers an array of waste management services from collection to disposal.
