Dr. Kwabena Donkor, former Minister of Power, has strongly criticized the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for its recent donation of 200 motorbikes to the Ghana Police Service. Labeling the gesture as “irresponsible,” Dr. Donkor highlighted ECG’s substantial indebtedness to Independent Power Producers (IPPs) as a pivotal concern.

Speaking to reporters, the Pru East MP expressed his astonishment and disapproval of ECG’s decision, emphasizing that the company, grappling with billions of cedis in debt, should not assume the responsibility of providing logistical support to the police force. He underscored the recent intervention by the Minister of Finance to prevent Sonon Asorgli’s closure due to ECG’s outstanding debts to IPPs, citing this as evidence of ECG’s financial instability.

Dr. Donkor called for immediate action, urging the Ministers of Energy and State Enterprises to thoroughly investigate ECG’s management and their decision to donate the motorbikes to the Ghana Police Service. He stressed that such actions were unacceptable given the company’s existing financial predicament.
