President Akuffo Addo Reveals Mental Healthcare to be Included in National Health Insurance Scheme by 2024

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo recently disclosed plans for the state to encompass mental health treatment within the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). Addressing a gathering of physicians and surgeons in Accra, the President emphasized the significance of prioritizing mental health, asserting that it’s a concern that demands collective attention.

During the discourse, he highlighted the pivotal role of specialized professionals deployed across all hospitals nationwide in realizing the goal of universal coverage. President Akufo-Addo stated, “Next year, mental healthcare will be incorporated into the benefits package of the National Health Insurance Scheme. Nonetheless, we acknowledge that ensuring universal health coverage hinges on the presence of specialists in every healthcare facility across the nation. It’s time to set ambitious targets.”

Additionally, the President urged for seamless collaboration among diverse health professional bodies in Ghana to effectively steer the country towards achieving universal health coverage objectives. He stressed that the attainment of benchmarks reached by developed nations, where healthcare experts often migrate, is within Ghana’s reach.

He emphasized, “The Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, the Ghana Medical and Dental Council, the Ghana Health Service, and the Ministry of Health must synergize efforts to ensure our nation attains these objectives.”

The President’s announcement signifies a significant stride towards prioritizing mental health within Ghana’s healthcare system, aiming to extend essential coverage to all citizens.
