Celestine Donkor Offers Apology for Comments Regarding Nathaniel Bassey’s Advice to Ghanaian Gospel Artists

Renowned Ghanaian gospel artist and songwriter, Celestine Donkor, has issued an unreserved apology following her recent remarks concerning Nathaniel Bassey’s advice to Ghanaian gospel musicians.

During a discussion on Joy FM’s X (formerly) spaces with Kwame Dadzie on December 6, 2023, Donkor suggested that Nathaniel Bassey’s advice urging Ghanaian artists to create more English songs was driven by guilt. Bassey had encouraged Ghanaian gospel artists to broaden their international appeal by producing more songs in English during his performance at the Jesus Encounter Concert held at the Accra Sports Stadium on December 2, 2023.

While acknowledging the talent among Ghanaian gospel artists, Bassey expressed concern about their frequent use of local dialects, which, he believed, limited their global reach.

Donkor had previously remarked that Bassey’s advice might have been influenced by a sense of guilt, pointing out the preference given to Nigerian artists over their Ghanaian counterparts in the music industry.

However, in a press statement reported by Ameyaw Debrah Media, Donkor expressed regret for her comments, stating that some of her remarks during the discussion did not convey her intended message.

“I would like to sincerely say that I do believe in prophetic utterances and do respect and honor Nathaniel Bassey. I sincerely apologize to all who find my comment on the issue in bad taste. That was not my intention at all. I will never disrespect the man of God,” her statement read.
