Manasseh Addison Sackey, a 34-year-old teacher and incumbent assemblyman seeking re-election in the Teberebie Electoral area in Prestea, Western Region, met an untimely demise. Known affectionately as Teacher Obour within the community and a dedicated educator at Teberebie M/A Junior High School, Sackey tragically drowned in a river while en route to campaign in nearby villages.
Despite warnings from his campaign crew, Sackey persisted in his determination, believing the nearby campaign visit was within easy reach and that he could return promptly. Accompanied by five others and wearing Wellington boots, they embarked on a canoe to cross the river connecting Aklika.
Tragedy struck when the canoe capsized midstream, with three individuals managing to return safely, but Sackey and another gentleman remained submerged. Despite efforts by a search team, Sackey’s lifeless body was recovered hours later, around 6:00 pm, following the incident that occurred at approximately 2:00 pm. The body has been transported and is currently held at the Tarkwa Municipal mortuary.
This unfortunate event echoes a hauntingly similar incident from four years prior when a former assembly member, also vying for office in the same constituency, suffered a similar fate just weeks before the elections. The loss of Manasseh Addison Sackey has left the community in mourning as they grapple with the tragic loss of a beloved teacher and dedicated public servant.
