Billboard Featuring Bawumia’s 2015 Tax Tweet Erected in Accra

A social media influencer associated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has unveiled a new billboard in Accra, featuring a tweet from Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia. The massive display, positioned near Kwame Nkrumah Circle, showcases a tweet from Bawumia during his time as the opposition’s running mate back in 2015.

The tweet, dated December 2, 2015, criticized the NDC for increasing taxes amid the economic challenges they had allegedly caused. In the tweet, Bawumia promised a different approach under an NPP government.

The timing of the tweet is significant as it preceded the victory of Bawumia’s principal, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, in the 2016 elections. Subsequently, Bawumia and Akufo-Addo assumed office in January 2017.

This isn’t the first instance of such a billboard featuring Bawumia’s tweet. A similar sign appeared around Danquah Circle in Accra in late November 2023 but was mysteriously taken down, prompting speculation on social media, with some attributing it to government involvement.

Bawumia, currently vying for the presidency as the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer, is set to compete against former president John Dramani Mahama, the NDC flagbearer, and other candidates in the upcoming 2024 elections. The mounting of these billboards serves as a visible aspect of the political landscape as Ghana prepares for this significant electoradl contest.
