In response to the humanitarian crisis triggered by the overflow of the Akosombo Dam in the Lower Volta basin of Ghana, the World Bank has affirmed its commitment to assisting the Ghanaian government. Thousands of residents have been displaced, losing their homes, farms, and businesses due to the floods caused by the spillage of the dam, managed by the Volta River Authority.
During the 3rd Conference on Fisheries and Coastal Environment in Accra, Michelle Keane, the Operations Manager of the World Bank for Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, conveyed the organization’s deep sympathy for the affected victims. Furthermore, she emphasized the World Bank’s readiness to support the government’s efforts in addressing this crisis.
Mr. Keane also expressed optimism that the government of Ghana would utilize a $150 million loan facility, offering an opportunity to safeguard coastal communities from future flooding while implementing a sustainable long-term strategy.
