Dr. Arthur Kennedy, a notable figure within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has raised concerns about the government potentially using the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict as a new explanation for Ghana’s economic challenges. In an interview on Citi TV’s “The Point of View,” the US-based physician criticized the government and its communicators for consistently attributing Ghana’s economic woes to the impacts of COVID-19 and the Russian-Ukraine war.
Dr. Arthur Kennedy expressed his apprehension, suggesting that the NPP government might soon exhaust its list of excuses and resort to blaming the current hardships on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He emphasized the need for a more serious approach to the situation, highlighting that the government had received $3 billion from external funders due to COVID-19. Furthermore, the government had imposed a COVID tax that remains in effect, yet the blame for economic challenges continues to be placed on the pandemic.
Dr. Kennedy also addressed the NPP’s flagbearer primary, which he believed had exposed weaknesses and threats to the party’s democratic principles. He remarked on the pre-existing challenges facing the NPP due to the government’s record and noted that the primary process had discredited both the government and the party in terms of their commitment to democratic principles. He suggested that Kennedy Agyapong’s actions had negatively impacted the NPP’s credibility, potentially more than Alan’s departure from the party.
