Akudzeto Ablakwa Accuses Sanitation Minister of False Claims Regarding Akosombo Dam Spillage Evacuation

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has strongly criticized the Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Freda Prempeh, for what he alleges to be misleading statements about the evacuation plans for flood victims affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage. Ablakwa accused the minister of lying when she claimed that an evacuation plan had been offered to the affected residents who subsequently refused to comply.

In a recent appearance on TV3 in Accra, the opposition lawmaker expressed his dismay at what he saw as a lackadaisical response from the government towards the flood victims. Ablakwa insisted that the government must stop making matters worse and demanded evidence of the purported evacuation plans, challenging the minister to specify when and where such plans were presented.

He further revealed that Members of Parliament representing the affected areas were planning to file a motion in parliament to initiate a comprehensive investigation into the disaster. This motion, Ablakwa promised, would be broadcast live on television, ensuring transparency and accountability. He stressed that all alleged falsehoods would be exposed, and those responsible for any wrongdoing would be held accountable, with full compensation sought for the affected victims.

The Sanitation Minister, Freda Prempeh, had earlier stated, “We don’t want what has happened in Akosombo to happen to us in Accra. The Akosombo spillage, even though VRA, NADMO, and the Water Resources Commission came together to educate the people in the community, did a simulation exercise at Mepe, yet they refused to leave, they didn’t want to be evacuated, they stayed there till the end when we started spilling.”

It should be noted that the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) disclosed that they had rescued approximately 12,000 individuals from the flood-affected areas, including Mepe and other parts of the Volta Region, since October 13, 2023.
