A recent visit to the Adabraka Fish Market in Accra by GBC News has brought to light an alarming surge in the prices of fish sourced from the Volta River. This price hike is attributed to the escalation of water levels and the spillage of excess water from the Akosombo and Kpong dams, a situation that has disrupted the local fishing industry.
Mamaga Delight Esi Ametefe, the Leader of the Adabraka Fishmongers, confirmed that the rising water levels have led to a substantial increase in fish prices. Specifically, the cost of tilapia, which previously sold for 10 Cedis, has now surged to 13 Cedis, while catfish has seen a notable uptick from 12 Cedis to 15 Cedis.
The implications of these price hikes have not gone unnoticed, as both fishmongers and individuals who traveled from various parts of the country to purchase fish at the Adabraka Market have expressed their frustration. The shortage of smoked fish, coupled with the unanticipated rise in prices, has posed challenges for consumers and traders alike, putting additional strain on an already delicate seafood market.
