In a recent development, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the Majority Leader and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, has called upon the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to initiate contact with former party stalwart, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, with the aim of persuading him to return to the party.
Alan Kyerematen made headlines when he resigned from the NPP in September, declaring his intention to lead an independent movement. The Suame Member of Parliament believes that reaching out to Kyerematen might hold the key to resolving the ongoing issues.
Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu expressed his perspective on the matter, stating, “I think that every effort must be made, even if there’s only a one percent chance, to explore what may come out of it. We are discussing Alan’s situation and suggesting that we should engage to see if he might consider returning. Delving into specifics at this stage might hinder the reconciliation I’m proposing. It’s possible to bring him back,” he noted during an interview with 3news.
Alan Kyerematen, a former Minister for Trade and Industry, announced his decision to depart from the party and run as an independent candidate in the forthcoming 2024 elections on September 25th. He cited alleged intimidation against his supporters and concerns that the party had been taken over by a select few.
Kyerematen’s decision reverberated throughout the political landscape, as he had been a dedicated member of the NPP for many years. Known for his extensive political experience and contributions to the NPP, he has held various government positions.
The Majority Leader’s appeal for reconciliation underscores the significance of potential party unity as the NPP navigates the political landscape in the lead-up to the 2024 elections.
