In a landmark announcement during the 50th-anniversary celebration of the National Service Scheme (NSS) held at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo unveiled his government’s commitment to transform the NSS into an authoritative body. This ambitious initiative is set to redefine the role of the NSS and provide a legal framework for a model known as ‘deployment for employment.’

President Akufo-Addo revealed that a draft policy document, a first in the NSS’s history, is in development to guide the scheme’s implementation. Following this, a draft Bill will be presented to Parliament with the aim of elevating the NSS into the status of an Authority. This significant move aims to empower the NSS to play a pivotal role in helping young graduates find employment and contribute to the nation’s development.

Acknowledging the evolving global landscape and the need for sustainable development, President Akufo-Addo emphasized that his administration is committed to a comprehensive transformation of the NSS. This transformation aligns with a new strategic direction aimed at addressing the specific employment needs of recent graduates. It will position the NSS as a dynamic agent that molds young talents for the workforce.

President Akufo-Addo also touched on financial restructuring within the NSS while commending its leadership for its impactful contributions over the years. Notably, he announced the creation of 81,000 jobs in the agricultural and allied sectors through the economic enclave program over the next four years.

Under this initiative, the NSS plans to deploy 65,000 graduate youths to agricultural enclaves, develop 20,000 hectares of land for production, produce 110,000 metric tons of food, and generate revenue of approximately $92 million by the end of the four-year period. These efforts are part of the NSS’s commitment to harnessing the potential of the youth for civic duties, fostering national cohesion, and driving sustainable development.

President Akufo-Addo’s announcement marks a significant step toward modernizing and expanding the role of the National Service Scheme, offering fresh opportunities for young graduates and contributing to the nation’s growth and development.
