The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is calling on the Electoral Commission (EC) to extend the ongoing limited voter registration exercise in order to accommodate eligible citizens who have been unable to register due to challenges faced by the Commission.
The EC initiated the registration exercise in all district offices in September, with the scheduled end date set for today, October 2. According to the EC, more than 600,000 eligible voters have been successfully registered so far.
However, Mustapha Gbande, the deputy General Secretary of the NDC, expressed concerns over the exclusion of individuals who have been patiently waiting in queues at various registration centers. He stressed the importance of ensuring that all eligible applicants are given the opportunity to register before concluding the exercise.
Gbande highlighted the plight of individuals who have been queuing for several days, making personal arrangements for their meals and accommodation. He called on the EC to allocate additional resources, including machines and staff, to expedite the registration process and prevent individuals from being turned away.
Citing the example of Asuogyaman, Gbande revealed that people have been waiting in queues for up to four days, with a system in place where individuals write their names down and register when their turn arrives. Consequently, these individuals consider themselves to be part of a queue and should be given the chance to complete their registration.
The NDC’s appeal for an extension of the limited voter registration exercise aims to ensure inclusivity and uphold the democratic rights of all eligible citizens to participate in the electoral process. The party expects the EC to take immediate action by providing adequate resources and extending the registration period to accommodate those awaiting registration.
