Salam Mustapha, the National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has found himself under scrutiny and facing accusations of hypocrisy after his controversial remarks regarding the historic three-day street protest known as #OccupyJulorBi House.
Mustapha labeled the protest as “rhetoric” and questioned the demonstrators’ motives. However, his statements have ignited a firestorm of criticism from prominent figures in Ghanaian media, including Naa Ashakor and Berla Mundi.
During a phone interview on TV3 Ghana, Salam Mustapha struggled to defend his earlier comments when Berla and Naa Ashakor pressed him with a barrage of questions. Many viewers applauded the journalists for their persistence in seeking clarity on Mustapha’s position.
One Twitter User took to his timeline to express his frustration, stating, “Salam Mustapha has proved that he is nothing but a thoughtless homo sapien who is incapable of being called a political leader. He is a complete waste of time and space in the history of human existence.”
The protest, organized by Ghana’s youth wing, aimed to draw attention to the deteriorating state of the country’s infrastructure, particularly the motorway and other roads. Mustapha dismissed their concerns as “usual rhetoric that borders on politics” and suggested that the protestors lacked a meaningful reason to demonstrate.
What adds a layer of irony to this situation is a Facebook post from Mustapha in 2014, during the previous administration’s tenure, in which he called on all Ghanaians to “Occupy the Lawn in front of the Flagstaff House” (now Jubilee House). At that time, John Dramani Mahama’s NDC was in power. This post resurfaced on social media, prompting some to accuse Mustapha of hypocrisy for previously advocating civic engagement through protests while now criticizing similar actions.
In his 2014 post, Mustapha had stated, “Let’s do this for mother Ghana; the suffering is too much. Spread the word and be there yourself.” Social media users who brought attention to this post accused the NPP National Youth Organizer of failing to uphold the same principles he once advocated for.
