Leno Suffers Horror Injury And Left The Pitch On A Stretcher In Brighton Game

Arsenal suffered yet another injury blow in just their second game of the restart after goalkeeper Bernd Leno was stretchered off with what looked like a horrifying knee injury in the first half.

The German shot stopper went up to challenge for the ball with Neal Maupay in the 40th minute before being bundled over by the Seagulls striker and landing awkwardly.

Leno looked to be in agony as he received treatment on the floor before being taken off on a stretcher and replaced by Emiliano Martinez.

In their season re-opener against Manchester City on Wednesday night the Gunners lost midfielder Granit Xhaka – who also had to be taken off on a stretcher following a mix up with team-mate Matteo Guendouzi.

Mikel Arteta’s men lost that game 3-0 and had been hoping to get back to winning ways at the Amex before losing Leno in a blow to their campaign.

BT Sport at the time refused to show replay as it was too distressing.

At half time they did show replays but only from certain angles. They did have other footage but deemed it too graphic to show.

Leno, as he left the pitch, appeared to blame Maupay after the pair went up together to win the ball.

Speaking on BT Sport, pundit Rio Ferdinand defended Maupay and insisted it was not a ‘malicious’ challenge.

‘You can’t blame Maupay for that. It’s a contact sport and it’s a foul but it’s not malicious, come on.

‘A very nasty injury. Leno will be distraught, it’s difficult. Maupay will look at it and think he shouldn’t have gone in for it but it’s a contact sport. If I’m a Brighton player I want my striker doing that.

Fellow pundit Peter Crouch added: ‘Yeah he has left a bit on him. I’ve been there, you’re frustrated and you leave a bit on the keeper.

‘He’s been a bit naughty in my opinion. He’s not meant to injure him or do him any harm.’
