Euro 2020: Germany Hammer Portugal In Six-goal Thriller As Group F Gets Tougher

On Saturday, Portugal traveled to Germany for one of the most important matches of the European Championships thus far.

Both the Germans and the Portuguese would have been anxious to put down a marker in the so-called Euro 2020 ‘Group of Death,’ which was precariously poised after France dropped points in Hungary in the early kick-off.

After Cristiano Ronaldo capped off a sweeping counterattack that left Germany shellshocked, it appeared as if Portugal would add to their win over Hungary in the first round.

The Germans, however, drew their socks up and clawed their way back into the fight, demonstrating their superiority on the day by pushing forward.

The weak Portuguese defense buckled under the pressure, surrendering two quick own goals as the reigning champions’ promising first half came to a halt.

However, things would only get worse in the second half as a brilliant German side refused to give up and went on a brutal goal-scoring spree.

And there were more goals, as Die Mannschaft finally scored a goal, with Kai Havertz tapping home at the back post after a lovely, free-flowing play.

They would add to that tally only minutes later, when Robin Gosens, a constant thorn in the Portuguese side, thumped one home after another excellent build-up.

The Portuguese, on the other hand, were not about to give up, pulling a goal back after Ronaldo deflected a free-kick into the path of Diogo Jota, who slammed it home from just beneath the bar.

Despite Renato Sanches hitting a thunderbolt off the post late on, that was how it remained as Germany resurrected their campaign in what was arguably the game of the tournament.

Their performance sent an unsettling message to the remainder of the competition, which may have thought the Germans were no longer a threat following their loss to France.
