Ghanaian diplomat, Martha Ama Akyaa Pobee, has been appointed as the United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Africa by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres.
Pobee will be serving in the Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations (DPPA-DPO).
The position was previously held by Guinea’s Bintou Keita who has been assigned as the Secretary-General’s Special Representative in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Head of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO).
As a career diplomat, Pobee brings to the position over three decades of experience in International Affairs and Diplomacy with Ghana’s Foreign Ministry.
She serves as the Chief Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, and previously served as the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Ghana to the United Nations from 2015 to 2020.
