A 62-year-old woman, Nana Ama Nwurueze, has been remanded by the Adabraka District Court in Accra for allegedly defrauding another businesswoman of $13,000 under false pretenses.
Nwurueze is accused of falsely claiming ownership of multiple properties, including Ohemaa Plaza at East Legon, fishing vessels in Takoradi, and a house at Airport, to deceive the complainant, Dorothy Asare, into parting with the money.
The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Apewa Achana, charged her with defrauding by false pretenses. She was arrested in March 2024 after evading law enforcement for years, following a bench warrant issued in December 2023.
Appearing before Her Worship Abena Asoh Owusu-Omenyo, Nwurueze pleaded not guilty. Her lawyer, George Asamani, sought bail, arguing that she had been unwell and had no intention of fleeing. However, the prosecution opposed the request, citing her history of evading arrest since 2021.
The judge denied bail and ordered her remand, stating that she posed a flight risk.
