At least five people sustained injuries after a brief but intense rainstorm collapsed over sixty houses in the Amakye-Bare Community, located in the Atwima Nwabiagya District of the Ashanti Region.

The downpour, which lasted only five minutes, was accompanied by strong winds that destroyed properties and left over 100 residents homeless.

Collins Osei-Tutu, the assembly member for the area, told JoyNews that some of the collapsed buildings trapped residents inside, resulting in injuries.

“An early intervention helped rescue people trapped in their homes, saving lives. In one house, a man, his wife, and children were trapped in a collapsed building. They sustained injuries, but no lives were lost,” he explained.

The storm also swept away a container housing some workers, adding to the chaos.

A local chief has stepped in to support the victims by covering their medical expenses. Meanwhile, residents are appealing to the government and non-governmental organizations for assistance.

“We have reported the incident to the district assembly and the district NADMO director and are awaiting their support,” said Assemblyman Osei-Tutu.

The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) is expected to assess the situation and provide relief to the affected community.
