The Black Stars of Ghana were denied maximum points in N’Djamena after conceding a dramatic late equaliser in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier, drawing 1–1 with Chad on matchday seven at the Stade Olympique Maréchal Idriss Déby Itno.
Ghana, who topped CAF Group I with 15 points from six games heading into the fixture, had the chance to extend their dominance but instead settled for a share of the spoils. Chad, meanwhile, celebrated their first point of the campaign after six straight defeats.
The Black Stars were forced to make the trip without key men Joseph Paintsil, who missed his flight from New York, and Alexander Djiku, who stayed behind to complete a move to Spartak Moscow.
Ghana started brightly and took the lead in the 17th minute when Mohammed Kudus sent in a precise low cross for Jordan Ayew, who converted clinically to record his sixth goal of the qualifiers, adding to his four assists.
Despite dominating the first half, Ghana failed to add to their tally, leaving the game open after the break. Chad gradually grew in confidence, disrupting Ghana’s rhythm and creating chances in the latter stages.
Their resilience paid off in the 90th minute when Célestin Ecua pounced on a pass from Éric Mbangossoum and fired home with his left foot to stun the visitors and seal a hard-fought draw.
The result leaves Ghana on 16 points after seven matches, still leading the group but missing the chance to pull further clear. Chad, meanwhile, will take pride in finally breaking their losing streak with their first point in the qualifiers.
