2024 Budget: Government Allocates GH¢220 Million for Akosombo Dam Spillage Relief Efforts

In a compelling move to address the aftermath of the recent Akosombo Dam spillage, Ghana’s Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, unveiled a comprehensive plan during the presentation of the 2024 budget to Parliament. A staggering GH¢220 million has been earmarked to support relief efforts, specifically targeting the affected communities and mitigating the widespread impact of the spillage and subsequent floods in regions including Oti, Savannah, and Bono-East.

During the presentation, Ofori-Atta emphasized the government’s commitment to swiftly alleviate the hardships faced by those affected by the spillage, acknowledging the urgency in providing essential aid to these areas. The allocated funds aim to cater to immediate relief needs, encompassing crucial aspects such as shelter, food, medical assistance, and infrastructure rehabilitation.

Moreover, looking beyond the initial relief phase, the Finance Minister highlighted the government’s intention to collaborate with the Ministry of Agriculture. This partnership seeks to allocate supplementary resources dedicated to the restoration of livelihoods in the impacted regions. This strategy underscores Ghana’s determination not only to address immediate crises but also to foster sustainable recovery and stability for the affected communities.
