Former Gender Minister Nana Oye Bampoe Sues Ex-Husband Tony Lithur for US$1.5 Million in Libel Case

Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, the former Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, has initiated a libel lawsuit against her ex-husband, Tony Lithur, seeking US$1.5 million in damages. The legal action pertains to statements made by Mr. Lithur in his divorce petition filed on May 2, 2018, which were later published.

The couple’s marital journey began on April 14, 1991, when they married under customary law. Their marriage was later formalized under ordinance law in January 1998. On May 2, 2018, Tony Lithur, a prominent lawyer, filed for divorce from Nana Oye, a case that has been partially heard since.

The statements from the divorce petition were subsequently made public through media outlets. Nana Oye contends that these published statements are defamatory. She asserts that Mr. Lithur included false claims in the divorce documents, leading to the damaging publication of defamatory remarks about her.
