A tragic fire at Hillside Endarasha Academy in Kenya’s Nyeri County has claimed the lives of at least 17 students, with 14 others injured. The blaze broke out late Thursday night in a dormitory at the school, according to Resila Onyango, spokesperson for the Kenya National Police Service. Onyango stated that the bodies were “burnt beyond recognition,” and the cause of the fire remains unknown at this time.

Kenyan President William Ruto expressed his condolences, calling the event “devastating news” in a post on X (formerly Twitter). He extended his sympathies to the families of the victims and instructed authorities to conduct a thorough investigation. “Those responsible will be held to account,” Ruto stated, adding that the government was mobilizing resources to support the affected families.

The Kenya Red Cross is also providing psychosocial support to students, teachers, and families. They reported that 11 children have been taken to the hospital, while the area of the fire has been secured by police.

A multi-agency response team is on-site, and a tracing desk has been set up at the school to assist in locating missing students.
