Seventeen individuals, including seven Chinese nationals and ten Ghanaians, have been arrested in a joint anti-galamsey operation by the Police Anti-Galamsey Taskforce at Samreboi in the Western Region.
The arrests, made on May 25, form part of intensified efforts by the Ghana Police Service to clamp down on illegal mining activities destroying the environment and forest reserves.
The suspects were immediately transported to Accra for further investigations to determine their level of involvement in the illegal mining operations.
According to the police, the operation is part of a broader campaign to dismantle illegal mining networks and restore degraded forest lands. The task force is also pursuing other persons of interest and stepping up patrols in affected communities.
The Ghana Police Service has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the national fight against illegal mining and protecting the country’s natural resources.
