A devastating rainstorm on May 16, 2024, has left a 16-year-old girl dead and several others injured in Jachie, located in the Bosomtwi District of the Ashanti Region. The storm caused extensive damage, ripping off the roofs of over 50 houses and other structures, and resulting in power outages across parts of the community.
Charles Osei Tutu, the bereaved father of the deceased girl, Abena Ofoda, recounted the tragic events. “The winds were very strong on Thursday. I was at work, but she was with her mother in the kitchen. The roof was torn off, and she was scared by the wind. She told her mother she was not comfortable with the strong winds. Her mother took her to another house nearby, but when she returned to fetch some items, she found our daughter had passed away.”
As residents await government assistance following an assessment by the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), they have started repairing their homes. The storm also damaged electricity poles, causing power outages in some areas. Local residents and businesses are urgently appealing for the restoration of power.
The Bosomtwi District Assembly is taking measures to support the affected residents. District Chief Executive Joseph Assuming told Citi News that his office is working with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to restore power to the affected areas.
