A 14-year-old boy from the UK has lost a legal battle against his parents after they sent him to a boarding school in Ghana to keep him away from gang influences in London.
The teenager took his case to the UK High Court, claiming he was deceived into traveling under the pretense of visiting a sick relative. However, his parents defended their decision, citing concerns over his safety and alleged involvement in gang culture.
The court ruled in favor of the parents, stating that their actions were motivated by “deep, obvious, and unconditional love.” The judge noted that evidence suggested the boy had been exposed to gang activity and had an unhealthy interest in knives, making him vulnerable if he remained in London.
His father explained, “We do not want our son to be yet another Black teenager stabbed to death in the streets of London,” referencing rising youth violence.
The teenager, however, described his experience in Ghana as “hell,” struggling to adapt to the school’s curriculum and feeling isolated. He reached out to the British High Commission in Accra in a desperate attempt to return to the UK.
With no immediate school placement available in Ghana, discussions are ongoing about his education. However, the teenager remains hopeful for a return to London despite the court’s ruling.
