Women in Bawku Protest Alleged Military Brutality, Demand Withdrawal

A group of women in the Bawku township staged a protest on Friday, expressing their grievances and alleging brutality by military personnel against residents. The protest, captured in a video, featured hundreds of women chanting slogans like, “We don’t need them [the military], we want them out.”

The demonstration was triggered by reported incidents on Thursday evening when soldiers allegedly entered Bawku and discharged firearms indiscriminately, leading to casualties. While the exact number of injuries is yet to be verified, residents reported that some people dispersed after the military intervention, and others continued to protest, with the injured being taken to Vineyard Hospital.

The unrest follows an earlier incident on Wednesday, where unknown gunmen reportedly fired into a group of people at the community center. The tragic incident resulted in the death of two individuals and left four others injured.

The women’s protest highlights the escalating tensions in Bawku and raises concerns about the use of force by military personnel.
