The Wenchi West District of the Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) Church, under the Mid-West Ghana Conference, celebrated 20 young girls aged 13 to 16 for preserving their virginity. The ceremony took place during a thanksgiving service on the first Sabbath of the year, January 4, 2025, at the church premises in Wenchi.
The girls were each presented with an undisclosed amount of money to support their upkeep. The initiative, organized by the Young Adventist Women Ministries, aimed to promote moral values and encourage the youth to uphold purity.
Mrs. Nana Amponsah Poku, District Coordinator of the ministry, commended the girls for their commitment and urged them to maintain their chastity until marriage. “God created you uniquely beautiful, and you must not allow anyone to lure or break your virginity until you marry,” she advised. She also emphasized the importance of choosing friends wisely in 2025.
Highlighting the significance of cultural values, Mrs. Poku called for the reintroduction of traditional rites such as Bragoro and Dipo, which historically helped to protect girls’ virginity and prevent teenage pregnancies. “These rites were essential in safeguarding young girls from promiscuity and fostering their growth and development,” she added.
Pastor Andrews Dua Bour Kyere, Associate Pastor of the Wenchi West District, praised the girls for their exemplary behavior and encouraged other young women in the church to prioritize their education and remain ‘pure.’
The honored girls expressed joy and gratitude for the recognition and thanked the church for its support in shaping their spiritual and moral development.
