The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released provisional results for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), but not without controversy as the results of hundreds of candidates have been cancelled or withheld due to various infractions.
In a statement issued on Monday, December 30, 2024, WAEC announced that the entire results of 483 candidates were cancelled for bringing mobile phones into the examination hall. Additionally, 4,108 candidates had their subject results cancelled, while the results of 781 candidates were withheld pending further investigations into suspected malpractices.
The examination body revealed that the results have been published online, allowing candidates to access their performance on its official website.
A detailed analysis of the 2024 WASSCE results showed a decline in performance in three core subjects: English Language, Integrated Science, and Social Studies. However, performance in Core Mathematics remained stable compared to the previous year.
WAEC disclosed that the results of candidates from 319 schools have been withheld due to allegations of collusion and other forms of malpractice. These include the possession of foreign materials such as prepared notes and printed documents, the use of mobile phones during examinations, and planned cheating involving the connivance of some school authorities and examination supervisors.
“These cases are still under investigation. The withheld results of these candidates may be released or cancelled depending on the outcome of the investigations,” the Council noted in its statement.
The examination body reiterated its commitment to maintaining the integrity of the WASSCE and ensuring that examination malpractices are appropriately addressed. WAEC emphasized that the decisions taken were necessary to protect the credibility of the certificates issued to deserving candidates.
The Council also encouraged stakeholders, including schools and candidates, to uphold the highest standards of honesty and integrity during examinations to safeguard the educational system.
This year’s results reflect both the achievements and challenges facing the WASSCE system, with WAEC taking firm steps to address the latter and ensure fairness and transparency.
