Vice President Bawumia Commissions University of Ghana Sports Stadium Ahead of 2023 African Games

In a momentous ceremony, Ghana’s Vice President, Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, unveiled the University of Ghana (UG) Sports Stadium as the primary venue for the 13th African Games (AG) yesterday. The stadium, boasting a capacity of 10,000 spectators and equipped with a state-of-the-art Mundo track for athletics alongside warm-up tracks, is set to host the track and field events during the games.

Highlighting the significance of the occasion, Dr. Bawumia commended President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his foresight in upgrading the nation’s sporting infrastructure, including the UG Stadium. He lauded the construction of international-standard facilities like the rugby field within the complex, expressing confidence in the immediate and substantial returns anticipated from such investments.

Addressing the challenges encountered during the construction phase, Dr. Bawumia underscored the transformative impact such developments would have on the Greater Accra Region. He noted the emergence of first-class roads, access to potable water, and electricity in previously underdeveloped areas, citing the Borteyman Sports Complex as a testament to the broader socio-economic benefits of such initiatives.

Echoing these sentiments, Youth and Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif emphasized the government’s commitment to leveraging substantial investments in sporting infrastructure to foster sports development and drive Ghana’s socio-economic progress.
