The University of Ghana has suspended all social gatherings on campus with immediate effect following a resurgence of COVID-19 cases within the university community.
The directive, issued on Thursday, June 26, comes after the University Health Directorate confirmed both suspected and confirmed cases of the virus earlier this week. The resurgence was first acknowledged on Monday, June 23, prompting renewed health and safety protocols across campus.
In a statement, the university urged all staff, students, and visitors to adhere strictly to COVID-19 preventive measures to help reduce the risk of infection and community spread.
“All staff, students, and visitors are strongly advised to remain vigilant and strictly adhere to the recommended preventive measures,” the university said.
As part of the new restrictions, the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs has directed all student groups, including the Students’ Representative Council (SRC), Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG), Junior Common Rooms (JCRs), and departmental associations, to cancel or postpone all events and week celebrations until further notice.
Professor Rosina I. Kyerematen, Dean of Student Affairs, described the suspension as a necessary step to protect the health and well-being of the university population.
“These measures have become necessary to safeguard the health and well-being of the University community,” the notice read.
The university is urging full compliance with the directive to support efforts aimed at containing the spread of the virus on campus. Health authorities have also reactivated protocols, including increased testing, isolation measures, and monitoring.
The university has yet to indicate when the restrictions might be lifted, but officials say decisions will be guided by ongoing assessments of the situation.
