The University of Ghana has dismissed allegations made by Rev. Lawrence Tetteh, who claimed a high prevalence of HIV among students at the institution. Rev. Tetteh voiced these concerns on GTV’s Breakfast Show on October 24, sparking a response from the university, which called the claims “baseless” and “lacking credible evidence.”
In a formal statement, the university expressed disappointment over the remarks, highlighting that discussions on HIV/AIDS must be grounded in factual, scientific evidence to avoid fostering stigma. The statement underscored that HIV diagnoses rely solely on scientific testing, not speculation or non-medical interventions.
The university urged Rev. Tetteh and GTV to retract the statements and issue an apology, emphasizing that unfounded claims can incite public fear and perpetuate misinformation. Additionally, the institution called on the media and public to handle health matters responsibly, promoting accurate and verified information.
