An Accra Circuit Court has remanded two police officers, General Lance Corporal Philmon Agbevem and General Lance Corporal Peter Kwame Badagbor, into custody for their alleged involvement in a robbery incident near Jubilee House, the seat of Ghana’s government.
According to ASP Kofi Anane, who narrated the case in court, the incident occurred on July 22, 2024. The complainant, Emmanuel Amerodor, a motor rider residing in Adentan, Accra, was reportedly arrested by the two officers while they were off duty but in uniform, riding a police motorbike. The officers had received information that Amerodor and another rider had allegedly snatched a purse containing a mobile phone and personal items from a victim near the National Theatre, heading towards Sankara roundabout.
The officers pursued and confronted the riders at the Christ the King traffic light, in front of the Jubilee House. While the rider managed to escape, Amerodor, the pillion rider, was apprehended, beaten, and handcuffed by the officers. The officers allegedly transferred GHC3,700 from Amerodor’s mobile money account to a number registered to “HOPE ALOVORDZI” and also took GHC120 in cash from him.
Amerodor reported the incident to the Cantonments Police and the CID headquarters for further investigation. The officers were arrested on August 8, 2024. During interrogation, they admitted to arresting Amerodor but denied robbing him.
The prosecutor, ASP Emmanuel Haligah, requested that the officers be remanded in custody to allow for further investigation. The trial judge, Evelyn Asamoah, denied bail and remanded the accused officers into custody, adjourning the case to September 10, 2024.
