Two individuals have sustained injuries following a violent clash in Agyako Buoho, Ashanti Region, over a chieftaincy dispute. The altercation arose after an alleged secret enstoolment of a new chief, which has been met with strong opposition from a section of the community.
Tensions flared as some residents resisted the enstoolment, with reports of heavily-built men patrolling the area on motorbikes, instilling fear in the community. The palace has been surrounded to prevent certain royals from proceeding with the enstoolment.
Duncan Nkrumah Poku, a former presiding member of the Afigya Kwabre South District Assembly, confirmed the incident to Adom News. He revealed that the Gyaasehene, traditionally chosen from the Tano family, is at the center of the conflict. A petition has been sent to the Manhyia Palace to halt the enstoolment process.
“We are aware of plans to enstool a new Gyaasehene this evening, but we won’t allow it,” Poku stated, adding that police personnel and some men reportedly attacked protesters, leaving two individuals injured. The victims have since been hospitalized.
Residents have called on the Ashanti Regional Minister and the Ashanti Regional Police Commander to intervene and restore peace in the area.
