Teen Father Accused of Poisoning 10-Day-Old Son in Assin-Praso

In Assin-Praso, located in the Assin North District of the Central Region, the local police have launched an extensive search for a teenage father who stands accused of poisoning his ten-day-old baby boy with weedicide.

As of Sunday, October 22, the infant remains alive and is responding positively to medical treatment at the Presbyterian Hospital in Assin-Praso.

The mother of the victim, a 16-year-old girl named Ms. Esther Baah, revealed that both she and the father of the child, Godfred Nelson, alias Paa Akwasi, 19 years old and a Senior High School (SHS) three student, had initially contemplated the unthinkable act of killing the baby. Their purported reason was to free themselves from the responsibilities of parenthood, allowing them to focus on their educational aspirations. Their efforts to terminate the pregnancy had proven unsuccessful.

However, after Ms. Baah gave birth and experienced the trials of pregnancy, delivery, and caring for an infant, she had a change of heart and abandoned the plan to harm her child. Unfortunately, Nelson continued to harbor the sinister intention of ending the baby’s life using weedicide.

Ms. Baah tearfully recounted, “We both planned to kill the baby to allow us to pursue our education. But the pain and trauma I endured during pregnancy and delivery made me change my mind, but little did I know that my boyfriend still harbored the intent to kill the innocent baby.”

The baby’s grandfather, Mr. Kwaku Arkoh, provided details of the disturbing incident to the Ghana News Agency. He stated that Ms. Baah found the baby crying uncontrollably upon her return from the bathhouse. When she attempted to breastfeed the child, she noticed a foamy substance in the baby’s mouth, along with liquid stains on the infant’s clothing, as he continued to vomit. Realizing the severity of the situation, they rushed the baby to the hospital, where it was confirmed that the infant had been poisoned.

Upon hearing of the dire consequences of their actions, Nelson fled the scene. Meanwhile, the suspect’s mother, Afia Tawiah, expressed her frustration and disappointment in her son’s behavior and called on the police to swiftly apprehend him. She questioned the motivation behind his attempt to harm the innocent baby, emphasizing that she had assumed all responsibilities for the child’s care and upbringing.

Afia Tawiah concluded, “I have taken all the responsibilities upon myself, so why should he think of killing the baby? He must be arrested as soon as possible to face the law because I don’t tolerate nonsense.”

This shocking incident continues to be a matter of concern in Assin-Praso, as the authorities intensify their efforts to locate and bring the accused teenage father to justice.
