Uruguayan referee Andres Cunha and video assistant Esteban Ostojich were suspended Wednesday after failing to give a red card to Argentina defender Nicolas Otamendi during a World Cup qualifying match against Brazil.

Otamendi hit Brazil forward Raphinha with his elbow in the 35th minute of Tuesday’s match in San Juan. The Brazilian needed five stitches at halftime and still continued to bleed in the second half.

“It looks like a foul for a yellow card. I don’t see a red,” Ostojich told Cunha, according to a video released Wednesday by South American soccer body CONMEBOL.

Otamendi wrote on Twitter he had only touched the ball.

The match ended in a 0-0 draw, which was enough for Argentina to qualify for next year’s World Cup in Qatar. Brazil had already qualified for the tournament.

CONMEBOL said in a statement that Cunha and Ostojich committed “a serious mistake” and the two were suspended for an “indefinite time.” The Uruguayan referee was removed from the VAR booth for Saturday’s Copa Sudamericana final between Red Bull Bragantino and Athletico.

Also Wednesday, CONMEBOL suspended Chilean referee Roberto Tobar for not punishing Neymar and Juan Guillermo Cuadrado in Brazil’s 1-0 win over Colombia last Thursday.

Neymar put his chest close to Tobar’s during that match in Sao Paulo, but the Brazilian wasn’t booked. Cuadrado illegally used his arm later in the game and also wasn’t carded.

The Brazilian soccer confederation said it will seek punishment for Otamendi at FIFA’s disciplinary committee.

Speaking after the goalless draw, Brazil coach Tite criticized Cunha and his video assistant referees.

“It is simply impossible not to see Otamendi’s elbow on Raphinha,” Tite said. “Was that going to decide the match? I don’t know. It was a great match, but there is an element (missing) that should be equal for both teams.”

Kurt Zouma's Brother Suspended By Club For Taping 'Cat Abuse Video'

Kurt Zouma’s younger brother, 23-year-old Yoan, has been suspended by his club, Dagenham and Redbridge over filming his brother’s cat maltreatment footage that has since received massive outrage.

It has emerged that Yoan took delight in filming his elder brother and West Hamstar Kurt punching and kicking one of his pet cats.

In a statement, the club said; “Dagenham & Redbridge FC would again like to reiterate that it condemns any form of cruelty towards animals and fully understands the reaction of many of its supporters.

“The Club has therefore decided that until the RSPCA has completed its investigations, Yoan will not play for Dagenham & Redbridge in any competitive match.”

Jackie Chan Carries Olympic Torch Atop Great Wall
The Olympic torch relay began its second day on Thursday atop the Great Wall.

Hong Kong actor Jackie Chan and Chinese Olympic medallists took turns carrying the flame along a route shortened to three days because of COVID-19.

The relay for the torch that will open the Feb. 4-20 Winter Games is much more modest than the globe-spanning relay for Beijing’s 2008 Summer Games, a tour that was disrupted by protests.

Table tennis Olympic gold medallists Ma Long and Wu Jingyu, a two-time gold medallist in taekwondo, were among those carrying the red-and-silver spiral torch along the Badaling section of the Great Wall. The morning temperature was a bracing -11 Celsius (12 Fahrenheit).

Chan, 67, an action and comedy film star known for his support of the Beijing government, was identified in the official press release by his Chinese name Chen Gangsheng.

“I woke up at 4 a.m. This is my fourth Olympics. I’m very happy. I’m also cold!”, Chan told reporters after his run along the wall.

Badaling, the section of the wall most often visited by tourists, is 70 km (45 miles) northwest of central Beijing in the Yanqing district, near the Olympics sliding and Alpine skiing venues. It was built around 1500 A.D. during the Ming dynasty.

Later on Thursday, the torch will be taken to Zhangjiakou in neighbouring Hebei province, where most Olympic snow events will take place. The relay will end with the lighting of the Olympic cauldron at Friday’s opening ceremony.

Because of Covid-19, the games are taking place inside a “closed loop” keeping competitors and other Olympics personnel away from the public, and will be attended only by small, selected audiences.

Thomas Partey Pens Down Apology To Arsenal And Ghanaians

Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has apologised for his red card that will see him missing this weekend’s clash against Burnley at the Emirates Stadium.

The Ghanaian, who darted back from the Africa Cup of Nations on Thursday to make the Carabao Cup semi-final second-leg for the Gunners, was giving his marching orders following two yellow cards in the final three minutes of the match.

Partey only landed back in London earlier in the afternoon following Ghana’s early exit at AFCON but he was determined to help his side reach Wembley, where Chelsea awaited the winners of last night’s tie.

After initially starting the match on the bench, Partey entered the fray in the second half but his commitment to the cause backfired when a late lunge on Fabinho saw him dismissed.

The powerhouse midfielder has since taken to Instagram to apologise to Arsenal supporters, explaining the thinking behind his unexpected cameo at the Emirates Stadium.

He wrote: “Am responsible for anything that happened and will take all the critiques, I should get more intelligent not to get in a challenge already booked but this is my personality, I like to fight for every ball…’
