Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has called on President John Dramani Mahama to honor his pledge of being a leader for all Ghanaians by reversing the mass dismissals of public sector employees.

The new administration, through a directive from Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, has ordered the immediate revocation of appointments made by the previous government in its final days. This move has sparked widespread criticism, with Dr. Bawumia joining the chorus of voices condemning the decision.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday night, Dr. Bawumia stated that although he had intended to give the new government time to settle in and focus on national development, he could not remain silent while the rights of legitimately employed citizens were being violated.

“To ignore these injustices would be to neglect my duty to remind President Mahama and his government of their obligation to uphold the democratic principles enshrined in the 1992 Constitution and to ensure fairness for all,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia accused the Mahama-led government of targeting individuals employed under the previous administration, calling it ironic that a party that campaigned on job creation is now rendering Ghanaians jobless.

“The least a government that promised jobs could do, especially in times of high unemployment, is to innovate and create employment opportunities rather than dismiss workers,” he added.

Emphasizing the need to protect Ghana’s democratic institutions, Dr. Bawumia urged President Mahama to reconsider the decision, reverse the dismissals, and ensure job security for all citizens.

“I call on His Excellency President Mahama to be a leader for all Ghanaians by halting these actions, reinstating those unfairly dismissed, and safeguarding the rights of every citizen,” he stated.

Dr. Bawumia also voiced concerns over rising incidents of violence against individuals and state institutions, allegedly perpetrated by organized groups. He reiterated the need for the government to take swift action in preserving national stability and protecting democracy.

“We must strengthen our democracy, uphold our Constitution, and protect our institutions. Ghana can do better, and Ghana must do better!” he concluded.
