Rashid Pelpuo, the Member of Parliament for Wa Central, has taken aim at the Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, for his repeated denials of recent power cuts in the country. Pelpuo argued that former President Mahama had taken significant steps to address past power challenges, which had benefited the current administration.
This criticism comes in response to Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s assertion that the phenomenon of ‘dumsor’ (power outages) was exclusive to the tenure of former President Mahama. Opoku Prempeh described the current intermittent power outages as ‘dum sie sie,’ implying temporary outages for maintenance purposes.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on May 3rd, 2024, Pelpuo described the Minister’s comments as ‘insulting’ to Ghanaians. He stated, “John Mahama did what he did to alleviate the power challenges faced by the people of Ghana. This current administration has failed to increase our power generation capacity, not even by a quarter megawatt.”
Pelpuo emphasized that the existence of power cuts, which he affirmed, was a reality that the government should acknowledge. He criticized the government for denying the situation, stating that it showed a lack of respect for the Ghanaian populace. He urged Ghanaians to hold the government accountable for its actions and statements regarding the power situation in the country.
