The National Peace Council is convening a meeting today, November 28, 2024, with political parties and their presidential candidates to sign a peace pact aimed at ensuring a peaceful electoral process for the upcoming December 7 elections.
The pact obliges candidates to maintain peace before, during, and after the elections.
Rev. Dr. Ernest Adu-Gyamfi, Chairman of the National Peace Council, expressed optimism about the turnout, stating, “We believe all parties will be there. We’ve shared the pact with them for review, and no adverse feedback has been received so far.”
However, doubts remain about the participation of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). The party, led by Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has raised six conditions for its involvement. These include a demand for signatures from key officials such as the President, the Inspector-General of Police, the Chief Justice, the National Security Coordinator, and the Attorney General.
It is unclear if the NDC will attend the signing ceremony, despite the council’s efforts to secure the participation of all stakeholders.
