Parliament Approves $338 Million Loan for Extensive Reconstruction and Expansion of Accra-Tema Motorway and Surrounding Roads

In a move to address the pressing issue of traffic congestion and accidents caused by the deterioration of the Accra-Tema Motorway, Ghana’s Parliament has granted approval for a substantial loan of $338 million. The funds will be utilized for the redevelopment and expansion of the motorway, along with additional construction works on the George Walker Bush Highway and a segment of the Nsawam road.

The dire condition of the Accra-Tema Motorway has been a cause of concern for both commuters and authorities due to its frequent traffic congestion and accidents. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the government initiated the project to enhance the motorway’s infrastructure and improve overall road safety.

Patrick Boamah, the Vice Chairman of the Finance Committee of Parliament, recently revealed that a loan agreement seeking approval had been presented to Parliament. Boamah explained that the project would encompass three distinct sections, with a total length of 27.7 kilometers. The first section comprises the Accra-Tema Motorway, spanning 19.5 kilometers, which will undergo rehabilitation and expansion, resulting in a minimum of 10 lanes. The second section involves the George Walker Bush Highway (N1), covering 5.7 kilometers. The final section focuses on the rehabilitation of the existing six lanes on the Nsawam road.

“The scope of work for this project is going to be very comprehensive, spanning approximately three years or more, depending on the project’s progress,” stated Boamah. He further emphasized that the endeavor would be a joint venture between Maripoma Limited and Ghana Infrastructure Fund, ensuring efficient execution and management throughout the project’s lifespan.

The approved loan of $338 million will allow for the implementation of these extensive reconstruction and expansion plans, ultimately enhancing the motorway’s capacity and improving the overall flow of traffic. Additionally, the project aims to enhance road safety and reduce the occurrence of accidents, providing a safer and more efficient travel experience for motorists.
