Media personality and outspoken journalist Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah has been released after his arrest on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, ignited strong backlash from the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) and press freedom advocates.
Afrifa Mensah, host of the widely followed social media show FOR THE RECORDS, was reportedly picked up by security operatives under unclear circumstances. His sudden detention was met with widespread criticism, with many describing it as an attempt to silence dissenting voices in the media.
The NPP, through its General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, strongly condemned the arrest, calling it a direct threat to democracy. “The arrest of Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah by the NDC government is a dangerous attack on democracy and freedom of speech! Ghana must not descend into tyranny,” Kodua declared.
Minority Leader and Effutu MP Alexander Afenyo-Markin also joined the calls for the government to uphold press freedom and respect diverse political opinions.
Afrifa Mensah’s release has brought some relief to his supporters, but the incident has sparked renewed concerns about press freedom and the role of security agencies in political affairs. Many are demanding assurances that journalists will not be targeted for their views.
