NPP Communicator Richard Ahiagbah Urges WAPCo’s Patience Amidst Power Crisis

Richard Ahiagbah, the Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called on the West Africa Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) to prioritize customer relationships and exercise patience as Ghana faces power cuts linked to the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation’s (GNPC) payment challenges.

Expressing concern over the recent outages, Ahiagbah emphasized the importance of WAPCo demonstrating patience, strong customer service, and fostering positive relationships with customers, including the GNPC, as they work to settle outstanding debts.

Former Minister of Energy and Petroleum, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, attributed the power crisis, locally known as Dumsor, to various factors. He highlighted the GNPC’s inability to meet financial obligations to WAPCo, leading to gas shortages for power generation in the Tema enclave. Additionally, Buah pointed out the weak link in the value chain, noting the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) struggle to pay off-takers.

Buah revealed that Ghana is currently experiencing severe load shedding, with 500 MW of load being shed as of January 9th, 2024. He criticized the lack of transparency and communication regarding power outage schedules, urging the Ghana Grid Company to promptly release a load-shedding timetable for better planning by households and businesses.

Despite the significant power cuts, Buah highlighted the absence of a clear Dumsor timetable, emphasizing the frustration and inconvenience faced by the affected population. He urged the media to address the situation transparently and criticized the NPP’s perceived silence on the matter.
