Alhaji Mohammed Frimpong, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Party (NDP), and his campaign team were attacked by armed assailants in the Bono Region late Tuesday, November 26.
The attack happened around 11 p.m. as the team traveled between Nsakaw and Wenchi, returning from a campaign event in Namasa within the Tain Constituency.
Although some team members sustained minor injuries, no serious harm was reported.
According to Evans Ofori, the NDP’s Bono Regional Chairman, the attackers were masked and opened fire on their vehicle in an ambush.
“On our way to Wenchi, we encountered what appeared to be a police barrier. Earlier in the day, there had been a legitimate barrier at the same spot, so we assumed it was the same,” Mr. Ofori explained.
He continued, “However, we soon realized it was an ambush. Armed masked men started shooting, forcing us to reverse. The gunfire shattered our vehicle’s windows, causing injuries from the broken glass.”
The swift response of a police patrol team helped de-escalate the situation. The officers arrived shortly after the incident and escorted the team to Wenchi, where they reported the attack to the police.
Mr. Ofori commended the professionalism of the police officer traveling with them, saying, “The officer acted decisively and helped save our lives. We are grateful for his courage.”
Alhaji Mohammed Frimpong and the entire team are reportedly safe despite the ordeal. Investigations into the attack are underway.
