NCA Promises Lower Data Prices by End of 2024

The National Communication Authority (NCA) has announced that data prices are expected to drop by the last quarter of 2024, addressing the ongoing public concerns over high data costs and subpar service quality.

This assurance follows significant public dissatisfaction and demands for the dissolution of the NCA board. Much of the criticism stems from MTN’s designation as a Significant Market Power (SMP), a classification that some argue has contributed to unreliable data services and elevated costs.

In a statement, the NCA defended the SMP classification, stating its purpose is to encourage fair competition rather than impede MTN’s operations. The NCA highlighted that strategies like unbalanced interconnection rates, tariff parity, and technology neutrality are designed to enhance competition, stimulate innovation, and protect consumers.

During an interview on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News with Umaru Sanda Amadu, NCA Director General Dr. Joe Anokye revealed that the anticipated reduction in data prices will be facilitated by the introduction of the NGIC wholesale carrier-neutral open access network. This new network is expected to launch in the final quarter of the year and will enable telecom operators such as AT, Telecel, and MTN to purchase bulk data without the need for costly infrastructure upgrades, thus increasing efficiency and reducing costs.

Dr. Anokye expressed optimism about the future, stating, “Data prices are expected to go down, especially with the NGIC wholesale carrier-neutral open access network. Operators like AT, Telecel, and even MTN will be able to buy bulk data without having to upgrade towers or buy new equipment to provide 4G services, as another entity will handle that. The network is supposed to launch by the last quarter of the year, and as we add more towers, I think we should be hopeful.”
