In an alarming development, a promising student named Evans, hailed as one of the top performers at his junior high school in Tema, has been denied enrollment at Presec, Legon. Despite fervent efforts from his teachers to secure his placement, his mother has steadfastly refused to register him due to religious convictions that oppose education.
The boy’s teachers, who recognized Evans’ exceptional abilities, attempted to sway his mother’s decision but were unsuccessful. Even involving the social welfare authorities in Tema hasn’t resulted in a change of heart from the mother.
Sources indicate that the obstacle hindering Evans’ education stems from his mother’s affiliation with a religious group known as “God’s Kingdom at Last.” Attempts to establish contact with the church leader, who seems to play a significant role in this matter, have been met with difficulties.
Expressing concern about the urgency to secure Evans’ placement for the upcoming academic year starting in January, stakeholders are urging the Ghana Education Service to preserve his spot at Presec, Legon. The boy’s whereabouts, meanwhile, remain unknown, adding urgency to the situation.
While respecting the mother’s religious beliefs, advocates are fervently working towards finding a resolution that ensures Evans’ access to education, which is fundamental to his promising future.
